In 2021, Mendham Golf & Tennis Club adopted the master plan presented by Robert McNeil, ASGCA, of The Northeast Golf Company. Alongside contractors at NMP Golf, McNeil has now completed nearly all of the proposed improvements across the property.
Following completion of most of the plan, one major project remained: the 10th. This document, prepared in June 2025, sets the proposed enhancements to the par-5 — improving its aesthetics, strategy, agronomy, and playability so it matches the rest of the renovated course.
The plan has been revised several times since 2021. Bunkers have been moved and reduced in size to ease maintenance, to fit the style of work already completed elsewhere on the course, and to maximize the impact of each adjustment on member playability and experience.
Construction on the 10th is now complete. Below showcases the plan prior to completion, with featured photos coming soon of the finished work.
The bulk of the work happens within 200 yards of the green. Drag the handle to compare the existing corridor against the proposed sequence of bunkers, expanded short grass, and tall-fescue mounding.
No part of the hole's routing is moved. Every change is focused on the second-shot zone and the green complex — the moments where the par-5 either rewards the bold play or quietly punishes the lazy one.
Several revisions preceded the final concept. The sketch at right, drafted by Robert McNeil in April 2025, fixes the bunker positions (B1 / B2 / B3), the three principal lines of play (A, B, C), and the scatter of mounding and hollows that ties the right side of the corridor back to the 11th tee.
An photo of the corridor prior to renovations, paired with the proposed rendering from the same vantage. Drag to see the transformation; three bunkers renovated to match the new style and scale, with the introduction of a new bunker short of the green. Tree removal along the right side and introduced fescue areas for greater visual, strategic, and agronomic appeal.
Renderings prepared by Trey Jensen, Associate. They depict the bunker scale, the new cross bunker short of the green, the tall fescue and mounding along the right corridor, and the standout maple — now visible as a centerpiece of the par-5.
The plan answers three questions at once. The reshaped bunkers and fescue carry the visual style established elsewhere on the course; the tree removal improves turf conditions; and the wider fairway with new short grass makes the par-5 play to its full potential, for every skill level.
Reshaped bunkers, a new cross bunker, expanded pitch areas, and tall-fescue mounding tied through to the 11th tee. Hole 10 will stylistically match the recent work elsewhere at Mendham — a more dramatic, visually engaging hole on the flatter section of the property.
Removing the cramped trees on the right improves airflow, reduces fallen leaves, and exposes the existing maple as a true centerpiece of the renovated par-5.
Players able to reach in two now face heightened reward — and a heightened risk in the new sprawling cross bunker. A well-struck shot can use the right run-on fairway; a mis-hit can find disaster in the short fronting bunker. Players laying up choose between the bold angle near the bunkers and the safer left side.
Around the green, the expanded pitch areas and repositioned greenside bunkers create more mental challenge for highly skilled players, and better access for those who prefer to putt the ball back into play.
